Top Countertops for 2026

2026 is going to be a study in contrasts, and stone countertops will be completely dramatic, either in their veining or their minimalism. For those of you who want a bold, “pay attention to me” moment, the Calacatta stones are having a glamorous moment. And for the more subtle at heart, the Taj Mahals of the world are making their own sophisticated, “I am a modern, sleek, and uncluttered” statement.

In all natural stones, look for clarity and distinct, boldly pronounced veins, avoiding areas of blotchiness or dull grays. Backgrounds should be ivory, white, or cream to taupe, but not gray. Cracks should be avoided. Slab stones are graded based on quality. Inferior stones have long fissures or cracks. Yards may fill them, but they indicate structural weakness. Quartz, which is man-made, varies in quality as well, so turn to reputable brands and stone yards for all types of stone slabs, including quartz countertops.

THE WINNERS IN THE “NOTICE ME” CATEGORY

Calacatta Monet

Our first award winner is a backsplash that drives home the point of this significant kitchen with its bold pattern and noticeable, pronounced veining. The soft, warm black cabinets are complemented by the drama worthy of a Golden Globe, with the sophistication of a Chanel suit. Pair this with a stark white quartz counter that has translucency and depth. If this is your look, I am seeing you as creative and driven, with a strong sense of style.

Borghini

If I had to pick a favorite child, this would be it. This Calacatta Borghini Gold Marble is so substantive and expressive that we went boldly, using it on every surface and in the incorporated sink. The bright white background is a stunning contrast to the striking, distinctive veining. Vein colors are warm and dramatic, from black to taupe to gold. If you love this, you are telling me you are fearless, youthful, and passionate. Use accents of black, as we did in the hood,  and add a mid-toned white oak to exude warmth.

The finest French style

The Oscar here definitely goes to the French lady with the refined, polished dress. If you can’t get enough of French provincial living, this softer, more subtle Calacatta Gold is for you. It pairs beautifully with soft, cool light blues and very muted greens. Using this marble, if you want inset cabinetry and accents of wavy glass. You are a traditionalist in the most classic sense of the word, you know enough to use real brass (not shiny, fake gold), and you have exquisite antiques scattered in just the right amount.

Leathered Taj Mahal quartzite

For those of you refined minimalists, the Taj Mahal quartzites hitting the upmarket yards are the finest I’ve seen. Slabs are varied, from soft ivories with little veining to creamy beige with subtle, wispy veins. These slabs are elegant in their understated manner. They are gorgeous in both honed (matte) and polished. Leathered surfaces are achieved in the finishing by brushing the stone to create minor dimples. The final look is a subtle, tactile texture that is the ultimate in refined uniqueness.
