Your Home Remodel Questions, Answered

In New York State, there is no license requirement for an Interior Designer, so anyone with very little knowledge or experience can “hang a shingle.” When selecting an interior designer or interior design firm, a portfolio on a polished website should display professionally taken photos, and the quality of the website is often your first key into the quality of their work. A trained interior designer who runs a highly professional design business should have in-depth knowledge of computerized design software such as CAD and Chief Architect, along with expertise in space planning, kitchen design, residential design, and home renovation projects. The firm should have detailed systems in place to manage all timelines, materials, products, and installations, as hundreds, if not thousands, of items may be required to complete a project successfully. They should have strong project management experience and be able to handle your project seamlessly from inception to completion, coordinating effectively with contractors, trades, and vendors to ensure a smooth and successful outcome.

When used appropriately, an Interior Decorator typically has less formal training and helps select finishes, fabrics, textiles, furnishings, and soft goods to enhance a space's aesthetics. Since there is no licensing requirement in NYS, anyone can call themselves an Interior Designer, but this title should be reserved for someone with formal educational training who can provide comprehensive interior design services. A qualified interior designer should be able to develop highly technical floor plans, furniture layouts, space planning solutions, lighting plans, and certain construction documents for residential design and home remodeling projects. They should also possess in-depth knowledge of fabrics, textiles, furniture, cabinetry, lighting design, and material selections, allowing them to create functional, beautiful, and well-coordinated interior spaces.
A kitchen designer is a completely different specialty. Kitchen designers must have extensive technical knowledge of all components involved in custom kitchen design and kitchen remodeling. There is even a difference between a custom kitchen designer and one who is working at a kitchen showroom that sells stock or semi-custom cabinetry. Kitchen designers must know how to design, specify, and order cabinetry and should follow through with cabinetry installation supervision to ensure the project is executed properly. The better ones will also help you with countertop selection, flooring, plumbing fixtures, appliance selection, storage solutions, and other important aspects of a successful kitchen renovation.

Hiring a professional interior designer will save you significant time and money by guiding you through the design process efficiently, selecting and ordering appropriate materials, ensuring you end up with functional, aesthetically pleasing designs, and tracking your project budgets. They will be able to provide highly detailed floor plans, construction drawings, cabinetry plans, and design documents to share with contractors as you obtain bids, so you can compare apples to apples and ultimately receive more accurate quotes for your kitchen remodeling, home renovation, interior design, or addition project. A professional, highly regarded interior designer also has a highly regarded network of contractors, tradespeople, suppliers, and industry professionals. So if you want all the right people working on your project, a good, experienced designer will definitely help navigate that process. A contractor may profess to be able to design your kitchen or addition, but construction is a completely different field from interior design and space planning. Don’t hire a podiatrist to do your nose job.

Kitchens: The biggest mistake, hands down, is poor quality. If you want your kitchen remodeling project to look rich and timeless, it needs to BE rich and timeless (do not confuse "rich" with "overpriced"). Invest in the best quality custom cabinetry, kitchen cabinets, and cabinet hardware you can afford. The difference will show in durability, functionality, and long-term value, and it will also present as a completely different (read better) visual than a lesser-quality cabinet or piece of hardware. Quality materials are one of the foundations of luxury kitchen design and timeless kitchen design. And while we are on the subject of hardware: no bright gold, and no skinny, unsubstantial pieces.
Interiors: You need to max out the quality of your primary pieces, such as a sofa, a sectional, or a frequently used dining table. In residential interior design, these foundational furnishings set the tone for the entire space. Side tables and accent pieces can be more affordable, but your primary furniture pieces that receive a lot of daily use will become uncomfortable and look dingy quickly if you do not invest in well-selected, quality furniture. A good, experienced interior designer should know the trade-only furniture brands that offer beautiful, high-quality custom furniture options and luxury interiors while staying within budget. Thoughtful furniture selection is one of the keys to creating interiors that are both timeless and functional.
