I’ll be the first to admit that I am the world’s hardest client. When it came to remodeling our own home, I had a hard time choosing. So many options! Ultimately, I focused on a style that would complement our beach house (which gets regularly trampled by our busy family, our revolving door of summer parties, and, of course, Fred and Ella), while maintaining a contemporary, minimalist feel.
My house is bathed in sun and painted in Benjamin Moore’s Alabaster, as well as Scalamandre’s durable, forgiving Hopsack performance fabric. I used oatmeal tones in the living spaces, white oak on the floors, and linen and natural textures, most of which are slip covers for easy care. In a small home, it’s easy to do too much, so I was careful to edit the furniture and art to keep only what made the space look curated.
In the kitchen, I leaned a bit more transitional, with inset thick doors specially designed for me in an extra deep profile, from my favorite kitchen cabinet manufacturer, Wellsford Custom Cabinetry. I created my own shade, which at first glance may look off-white, but is really leaning towards a soft green. We chose a complete Thermador package, and I could not be happier with the way it functions and looks. I have so many favorite parts, but make sure you check out my walk-in pantry, where I completely changed the vibe and went cozy and dark, and also my apothecary coffee bar, and the walnut interior, which I custom-designed for my kitchen pantry cabinet.
Check out the hidden door in the cabinetry that leads to a walk in pantry. This hidden gem helps keep all of my counter appliances organized and within reach, but off the counters in the primary kitchen, and it also houses my paneled freezer, more food storage and larger platters and cookware.
